5 notes on this verseBrought beds - These no doubt consisted in skins of beasts, mats, carpets, and such like things. Basons - ספות sappoth. Probably wooden bowls, such as the Arabs still use to eat out of, and to knead their bread in. Earthen vessels - כלי יוצר keley yotser. Probably clay vessels, baked in the sun. These were perhaps used for lifting water, and boiling those articles which required to be cooked.

Three men meet David at Mahanaim: Shobi son of Nahash the Ammonite, Machir of Lo-debar, who had sheltered Mephibosheth, and Barzillai the Gileadite. They bring beds and basins, grain, honey, curds and flocks, for they said, “The people have become hungry, exhausted, and thirsty in the wilderness”.

Shobi, Machir and Barzillai brought beds, basins, and earthen vessels to David at Mahanaim. Adam Clarke takes the beds to be skins and mats, the basins wooden bowls for eating and kneading, and the earthen vessels sun-baked clay. Matthew Henry draws the duty of open hands toward the distressed.
