And they made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem,.... By heralds appointed for the purpose: to bring in to the Lord; into the house of the Lord, and for the reparation of it; and so for his service, honour, and glory: the collection that Moses the servant of the Lord laid upon Israel in the wilderness; not to bring in the tabernacle of Moses, as the Targum here and in 2Ch 24:6, but such a voluntary gift as Moses moved the children of Israel to bring, when in the wilderness, for the service of the tabernacle.

Second Kings 12:9 credits Jehoiada with boring a hole in a chest's lid. Chronicles credits the king's command and places the chest “outside, at the gate of the house of the LORD”. It adds a detail Kings omits: “All the officers and all the people rejoiced” and filled the chest.

Heralds carry the call across Judah and Jerusalem. Gill compares the gift to the offering Moses asked of Israel for building the tabernacle, which the people brought willingly in Exodus 35:4-29. He notes that the Targum reads the verse as a call to bring in the tabernacle of Moses itself.
