Second Kings 12:9 credits Jehoiada with boring a hole in a chest's lid. Chronicles credits the king's command and places the chest “outside, at the gate of the house of the LORD”. It adds a detail Kings omits: “All the officers and all the people rejoiced” and filled the chest.

Officials and people alike give gladly, a contrast with the slow collection of verse 5. Gill notes the money went in through the opening cut in the chest's lid, and that each person gave as much as he chose. They kept giving “until it was full”.
