Explanatory Notes upon the Old Testament (1765)

The sons - Ahaziah, and his brethren before they were carried away captive, chap. xxi, 17, who did this by her instigation, as this phrase implies. Broke up - Both broke up the treasuries, and defaced the house itself.

on 2 Chronicles 24:4-7

Chronicles alone explains why the house needed repair: “the sons of that wicked woman Athaliah had broken into the house of God”. Joash orders the Levites to collect the yearly money, and they do not hurry. Second Kings 12 records the same slow start without naming a cause.

Wesley identifies the sons as Ahaziah and his brothers, acting at their mother's urging before the Arabians carried the brothers off at 21:17. The verse ties the repair to Baal worship at the heart of the royal family, the same worship the people tore down at 23:17.
