Because of the sins of Jeroboam which he sinned, and which he made Israel sin, by his provocation wherewith he provoked the Lord God of Israel. Not that Baasha destroyed the family of Jeroboam because of his sins, which did so much mischief to Israel, and were so provoking to the Lord, from any dislike or hatred of them, for he walked in the same, 1Ki 15:34, but the Lord threatened this by his prophet, and suffered it to be done because of his abominations.

Baasha destroys the house of Jeroboam “according to the word that the LORD had spoken through His servant Ahijah the Shilonite”, the sentence of 14:10-14. The book states the fulfilment as plainly as the oracle. Verse 30 names the ground again, the sins Jeroboam committed and caused Israel to commit.

John Gill notes that Baasha struck down the house of Jeroboam for his own ends, for he walked in the same sins at verse 34. God used him to carry out the word of 14:10. The word against Baasha at 16:7 names this slaughter among his sins.
