2 notes on this verseAnd they dwelt at Beersheba,.... posterity of Simeon; and this and the other places of their habitation are mentioned in the same order, and with very little variation of names to the end of 1Ch 4:31, as in Jos 19:2 and here, at 1Ch 4:31 it is added: these were their cities unto the reign of David; when, according to Kimchi, and other Jewish writers, he expelled them from thence, and restored them to the tribe of Judah.

Simeon's inheritance is listed as cities held inside Judah's own territory, matching Joshua nineteen's account that the tribe's portion lay within Judah's larger allotment because Judah's share was too much for them. The recurring note, these were their cities unto the reign of David, marks a boundary the Chronicler's source dated its information by, and some of the towns, Ziklag among them, changed hands again in David's own lifetime.
