Simeon's inheritance is listed as cities, matching Joshua 19, where the tribe's portion lay within Judah's allotment because Judah's share was too large. The note, These were their cities until the reign of David, marks the date of the Chronicler's source. Some of the towns changed hands in David's lifetime.

Joshua 19:3 to 4 gives these towns as Balah, Ezem, and Eltolad. They lay in the Negev, among the towns first given to Judah in Joshua 15:29 to 30. Simeon's land sat inside Judah's, as Joshua 19:1 says.
