And the sons of Kenaz,.... Who was either the son of Chelub, or of Eshton: Othniel, and Seraiah; the first of these is he who is mentioned, Jos 15:17 and was the first judge in Israel: and the son of Othniel, Hathath; and the next mentioned.

This unit gathers several branches of Judah's families, among them the people of Ge-harashim, which was given this name because its people were craftsmen. Verse 18 records a marriage told nowhere else, of an Egyptian princess in Judah's genealogy: These were the children of Pharaoh’s daughter Bithiah.

The sons of Kenaz

Othniel is the first judge of Israel, as Gill notes, who delivered Israel from the king of Aram-naharaim in Judges 3:8 to 11. Joshua 15:17 calls him the son of Kenaz, Caleb's brother. Hathath carries his line on.
