Jonathan restates the plan of verse 5 and adds a meeting place, "the stone Ezel," and three days for David to stay hidden. The name Ezel is otherwise unknown, and older readers who take it to mean departure treat the name as fitting rather than as proof.

The hiding place points back to 19:2 and 3, when Jonathan hid David in a field and spoke to Saul where David could hear. Albert Barnes notes that the Septuagint reads argab, a heap of stones, here and at verse 41. David returns to known ground.
