Revelation 3:1

Sardis hears from him that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars, the fulness of the Spirit and the churches' own messengers held together in the one who now delivers the harshest single diagnosis of the seven, thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead. Unlike every other letter this one opens with no commendation at all before the charge lands, a church whose reputation had outrun its reality, alive in the eyes of its neighbors and corpse-still before the one whose eyes see past the name.

Revelation 3:2-3

Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die names a church with a few embers left rather than none, and I have not found thy works perfect before God locates the failure in works begun and abandoned rather than works never attempted. Remember, hold fast, and repent repeats Ephesus's threefold remedy, and the warning I will come on thee as a thief echoes the Lord's own words of Matthew 24:43 and anticipates 16:15's same image, a coming that catches the unwatchful church as surely as it catches an unwatchful world.

Revelation 3:4-6

Even inside a dead church a few names even in Sardis have not defiled their garments, the Lord counting individuals rather than only congregations, and they shall walk with me in white, for they are worthy names a worthiness of grant rather than of merit, the white robe being his gift to those he has kept clean. The overcomer's threefold promise answers Sardis's own failure point for point: clothed in white raiment against defiled garments, his name kept in the book of life against a name that only seemed alive, and confessed before my Father, and before his angels, the Lord's own promise of Matthew 10:32 now spoken in the first person to the church that most needed to hear it.

Revelation 3:7-8

the key of David: Philadelphia hears from he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth, a title drawn from Isaiah 22:22's steward Eliakim and applied to Christ as the one who alone controls entrance into the Davidic kingdom. I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it answers a church of little strength with an opportunity no opponent can close, and the commendation is unmixed, kept my word, and hast not denied my name, the only other letter besides Smyrna's to receive no charge at all.

Revelation 3:9

the synagogue of Satan: The synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie repeats Smyrna's charge against a specific hostile party rather than against ethnic Israel, whose future the book honours elsewhere at 7:4 and 12:1 per the site's anti-supersessionism reading. I will make them to come and worship before thy feet borrows Isaiah 60:14's language of Gentile nations bowing to restored Zion and turns it toward a persecuted church, vindication rather than triumphalism, that they may know that I have loved thee.

Revelation 3:10

Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world is the book's clearest single rapture text and is read two ways with holders. The pre-tribulational reading takes ek, from, as keeping from the hour itself, removal before the trial begins, the sense the site's own flag holds to, arguing from the parallel of tereo ek elsewhere and from the church's own absence from the earth-scenes of chapters 4 through 18; a mid- or post-tribulational reading takes the same preposition as protection through the trial rather than removal from it, arguing that keeping can mean preserving in the midst as much as taking out. Both readings argue from the grammar honestly, and the site states its own position while naming the other.

Revelation 3:11-13

Behold, I come quickly repeats the book's own refrain, and hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown warns even a faithful church against complacency. The overcomer's promise is the fullest of the seven, a pillar in the temple of my God, permanence for a church that had known the instability of an earthquake-prone city, and three names written upon him, the name of my God, the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, and Christ's own new name, each cashed in the vision of chapters 21 and 22 where the city descends and the Lamb's name marks its citizens. He that hath an ear closes the letter as it closes each of the seven, the Spirit's own refrain unbroken.

Revelation 3:14

Laodicea hears from the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God, a title Christ takes to himself echoing Isaiah 65:16's God of the Amen. The beginning of the creation of God names Christ the source and origin of creation rather than its first product, the same sense Paul gives arche in Colossians 1:15-18 where the firstborn of all creation is also the one by whom all things were created, a reading the church has held against every attempt to make the phrase teach a created Christ.

Revelation 3:15-16

neither cold nor hot: I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot names a condition worse than either extreme, and I would thou wert cold or hot makes plain that even open opposition would be preferable to indifference. Laodicea's own water supply, piped in lukewarm from distant springs while nearby Hierapolis had hot springs and Colossae cold, gave the image local force, and the sentence it draws, I will spue thee out of my mouth, pictures a body's own reflex against water that satisfies no thirst at all.

Revelation 3:17-18

I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing describes a city famous for its banking wealth, its glossy black wool, and its medical school's eye-salve, and the Lord answers each boast with the same word turned inside out, knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked. The counsel matches the city's own trades point for point, gold tried in the fire in place of banked wealth, white raiment in place of the black wool it prized, and eyesalve for the eyes in place of the medicine that could not heal the blindness that mattered.

Revelation 3:19

As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten answers the letter's severity with its motive, the same love Proverbs 3:12 and Hebrews 12:6 trace from a father to a son he disciplines rather than abandons. Be zealous therefore, and repent turns the diagnosis of lukewarmness directly into a command, the cure named in the same breath as the disease.

Revelation 3:20

I stand at the door, and knock: Behold, I stand at the door, and knock is spoken to a church already inside the door, Christ outside his own congregation because its self-sufficiency has shut him out, and if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me offers restored fellowship to any individual within it who will answer. The verse's evangelistic use, an invitation to the unconverted, keeps its power alongside this original setting rather than replacing it, since the same knock that calls a lukewarm believer back to communion calls an unbeliever to it for the first time.

Revelation 3:21-22

The last and highest of the seven promises grants to him that overcometh to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne, the Son's own pattern of overcoming through suffering into glory now shared with the weakest of the seven churches. The letters close as they opened, he that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches, the Spirit's word never confined to the one congregation first named, and the church-age vision of the book gives way to the throne room already glimpsed in this closing promise.
