Nehemiah 12:1-9

went up with Zerubbabel: The register opens with the priests and Levites who went up with Zerubbabel and Jeshua, the return generation named by father's house the same way Ezra 2 and Nehemiah 7 name the laity. Twenty-two priestly names stand against the twenty-four courses David ordered in 1 Chronicles 24, a gap the commentators trace to two courses that had died out in Babylon and never returned. Mattaniah is named over the thanksgiving and Bakbukiah and Unni keep the watches opposite their brethren, the singing and guarding already running in the alternating courses David set.

Nehemiah 12:10-11

A single priestly line runs six generations from Jeshua, who came up with Zerubbabel, to Jaddua: Joiakim, Eliashib, Joiada, Jonathan, then Jaddua. From this point the book measures its years not by the reigns of Judah's kings, since Judah had none, but by the succession of these high priests. Josephus records that Jaddua was the priest who met Alexander the Great after the fall of Tyre and Gaza, so the register's final name reaches past Nehemiah's own generation into the record's later keeping.

Nehemiah 12:12-21

of Seraiah, Meraiah; of Jeremiah, Hananiah: A second list of course heads follows, one name set against each of the courses named in verses one through seven, now serving in the days of Joiakim the second generation after the return. Several of these names recur among the sealers of Nehemiah's covenant in chapter ten, the same men and their descendants signing the document their fathers' courses had first carried home. The priesthood renews itself by father's house across a generation exactly as Ezra's registers required at the return, name matched to name and course matched to course.

Nehemiah 12:22-23

The record closes with a dating notice: the priests and Levites stand recorded down to the reign of Darius the Persian, a king later than Nehemiah's own governorship, showing the register kept itself current well past the events this chapter narrates. The book of the chronicles named here is a separate official register of the priesthood, since the biblical book of Chronicles preserves no matching list. That the roll runs to the days of Johanan the son of Eliashib shows a public archive maintained by the temple across at least two more generations.

Nehemiah 12:24-26

The chief Levites, Hashabiah, Sherebiah and Jeshua the son of Kadmiel, lead the praise and thanksgiving in courses set ward over against ward, the alternating order David commanded in 1 Chronicles 23. Six named porters keep the thresholds of the gates, the same guarding office the Levites shared with the singers throughout this record. Verse twenty-six anchors the whole roster to one moment by naming three men together, Joiakim the high priest, Nehemiah the governor, and Ezra the priest the scribe, the book's two reformers dated side by side with the man who held the office between their two callings.

Nehemiah 12:27-30

at the dedication of the wall: After twenty-six verses of roster the narrative returns to the dedication of the wall: the Levites are sought out of all their places and the singers gathered from villages built up around Jerusalem, at Netophathi, Beth-Gilgal, Geba and Azmaveth, proof the temple singers had grown into settled towns of their own since the return. The priests and Levites purify themselves before anything else, and only then purify the people, the gates and the wall, cleansing moving outward from the leaders to what they lead. Worship was prepared this way once before, at the altar raised ahead of the temple's foundation in Ezra 3, and the wall now receives the same order.

Nehemiah 12:31-37

Nehemiah brings the princes of Judah up onto the broad top of the wall and sets two great companies of them that give thanks, the first turning right toward the dung gate. A prince also named Ezra walks in this company, a different man from Ezra the priest and scribe, who is named later at the company's head. Trumpeters trace their line back six generations to Asaph, David's own choirmaster, and the company climbs the stairs of the city of David past the old palace to the water gate, the same gate where Ezra had once read the law aloud, with Ezra the scribe walking before them.

Nehemiah 12:38-40

The other company turns the opposite way, and Nehemiah himself walks after it with half the people, retracing gates chapter 3 had already named as building sites, the tower of the furnaces, the broad wall, the gate of Ephraim, the old gate, the fish gate, the towers of Hananeel and Meah, to the sheep gate where the whole wall began, and on to the prison gate. Both companies converge in the house of God, Nehemiah with the second company and Ezra with the first, the wall's entire circuit now walked in thanksgiving where it was once walked in construction. The two men who carried this book, the builder and the reader of the law, stand together in one scene for the only time either book records.

Nehemiah 12:41-43

Seven priests sound trumpets and the singers, led by their overseer Jezrahiah, sing loud enough that the chapter records it. Great sacrifices follow, and verse forty-three names the source of the day's joy plainly: God had made them rejoice, not the choir or the wall itself, and the joy reaches wives and children both, a household celebration rather than a leaders' ceremony. The joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off, and Spurgeon preached this verse alongside the joy of the Lord is your strength from chapter 8 as one sermon, the strength and the sound of the same joy.

Nehemiah 12:44-47

Joy becomes provision: men are appointed over storerooms for the offerings, firstfruits and tithes because Judah rejoiced for the priests and Levites who served, gladness producing giving rather than the reverse. Singers and porters keep their ward according to the commandment of David and of Solomon his son, reaching back past even the return to the temple's first builders. The closing verse compares the days of Zerubbabel to the days of Nehemiah and describes tithes moving in a sanctified chain, the people to the Levites and the Levites to the priests, so that the chapter that opened with a register of names closes with an economy that keeps them all at their work.
