Mark 16:1-4

When the sabbath was past the two Marys and Salome buy sweet spices and come at sunrise to finish a burial, and their one anxiety on the road is practical: who shall roll us away the stone? Mark notes it was very great, and the bench notes what the errand means, that not one of the women expected a resurrection; they came to anoint a body. The stone already rolled away is the first sign, and it was moved not to let the risen Lord out but to let the witnesses in.

Mark 16:5-6

A young man sitting on the right side in a long white garment is Mark's angel, described as the women saw him, and his announcement is the Gospel's summit in three clauses: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here. The bench lingers on the order, the crucified one named as crucified even in announcing the rising, and on behold the place where they laid him, the empty slab offered as inspectable evidence. The tomb is not a mystery to be guarded but a vacancy to be examined.

Mark 16:7-8

tell his disciples and Peter: Tell his disciples and Peter: two words carry the whole pastoral weight of the chapter, for the last time Mark showed Peter he was weeping over a triple denial, and the risen Lord names him so the message cannot be read as excluding him. Peter's own preaching stands behind this Gospel, and the bench hears the man's gratitude in the phrase being kept. He goeth before you into Galilee keeps the promise of 14:28 across the catastrophe. The women flee trembling and say nothing to any man, for they were afraid, and at exactly this point the oldest complete manuscripts end the book; the reader meets the question of the ending at the next verse.

Mark 16:9-11

he appeared first to Mary Magdalene: He appeared first to Mary Magdalene opens the passage the church calls the longer ending, and the question is stated here honestly, once, so the reader owns it: Sinaiticus and Vaticanus, the two oldest complete manuscripts, end the book at verse 8, while the great majority of manuscripts carry verses 9 to 20, and Irenaeus quotes verse 19 as Mark's in the second century, a witness older than either manuscript. The readings are three and each has holders: an ending lost or left unfinished with 9-20 as the church's inspired supplement; 9-20 as Mark's own; and verse 8's abrupt fear as a deliberate literary close. This site presents the passage as the text the church received, with the evidence beside it and no verdict stamped. The content itself begins with the Lord's first appearance given to a woman out of whom he had cast seven devils, and with apostles who mourn, weep, and do not believe her.

Mark 16:12-14

He appeared in another form unto two of them walking into the country compresses the Emmaus road into a sentence, and again the report meets unbelief. Then he appears to the eleven at table and upbraids them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, the same hardness Mark has charged them with since the loaves. The bench draws the apologetic point that the tradition preserved its own founders' stubborn skepticism: the men who would die proclaiming the resurrection are on record refusing three reports of it, and were persuaded by sight, not by expectation.

Mark 16:15-16

preach the gospel to every creature: Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature is Mark's commission, wider in wording than any other, all the world, every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned: the bench states the precision of the second clause, damnation is attached to unbelief alone, not to the lack of baptism, the believing thief being the standing case. Faith is the dividing line and baptism its appointed confession; the traditions on baptism's necessity are named where they divide and the verse's own grammar is allowed to speak.

Mark 16:17-18

These signs shall follow them that believe: casting out devils, new tongues, taking up serpents, immunity to deadly drink, hands laid on the sick who recover. The narrative fulfillments are in the book of Acts, devils cast out at Philippi, tongues at Pentecost and Ephesus, the viper shaken off at Malta with no harm, the sick healed throughout, and the deadly-drink clause alone waits without a recorded case. The promise is of protection in the way of duty, not an invitation to test God, and the snake-handling sects that make verse 18 a rite have inverted it into the temptation Jesus refused at his own pinnacle. The church receives these verses as a living charter of signs following the preached word, and the verse's own claim, signs follow belief, stands at full strength; the fulfillments in Acts are its first receipts, not its closing ledger.

Mark 16:19-20

He was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God: the ascension is stated in a sentence and Psalm 110:1 is its seat, the verse Jesus himself pressed at 12:36 now enacted. This is the verse Irenaeus quotes as Mark's in the second century, the anchor of the passage's early attestation. The book ends with the church in motion, they went forth and preached every where, and with the Lord not absent but working with them and confirming the word with signs following, the exact pattern verse 17 promised. Mark began with the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and ends with that gospel loose in all the world; the last word of the Gospel of action is, fittingly, work.
