Jude 1:1-2

brother of James: Jude names himself servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, the Jerusalem James, which makes him by the church's main reading the Judas of Matthew 13:55, a brother of the Lord who calls himself only his slave. The readers are described by three participles, sanctified by God the Father, preserved in Jesus Christ, and called, with preserved, tetheremenois, striking the note the letter will end on. Mercy, peace, and love be multiplied is the only greeting of its exact shape in the epistles.

Jude 1:3-4

Jude meant to write of the common salvation and was compelled instead to sound an alarm: earnestly contend, epagonizesthai, the athlete's agonized struggle, for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints, hapax, once for all, a completed deposit admitting no supplement. The occasion is infiltration, certain men crept in unawares, pareisedusan, slipped in by a side door, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, license wearing grace's name, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. Of old ordained to this condemnation means their sentence was written long ago, in the very examples the letter is about to read out.

Jude 1:5

The first example is Israel's own wilderness: the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not, deliverance followed by judgment on the unbelieving generation, the same warning Hebrews 3-4 and 1 Corinthians 10 draw. Some of the earliest witnesses read Jesus saved the people out of Egypt, a reading that would name the Son as Israel's deliverer outright, and the variant is real and worth the reader's knowing. Salvation begun is no license for unbelief after, which is the letter's whole edge.

Jude 1:6-7

The second example is angelic: the angels which kept not their first estate, arche, their proper domain, but left their own habitation, oiketerion, their assigned dwelling, are reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. The site's posture reads these with 2 Peter 2:4-5 and 1 Peter 3:19-20 as the Genesis 6:1-4 incursion before the flood, the Watchers of the tradition Jude's readers knew from Enoch's book, and verse 7's even as Sodom, going after strange flesh, in like manner, draws the parallel of transgressed boundaries in both directions; the reading that sees only the primeval fall of Satan's host stands with its holders. Sodom's cities suffer the vengeance of eternal fire, set forth for an example, deigma, a specimen on display.

Jude 1:8-10

Likewise also these filthy dreamers repeat the pattern, defiling the flesh, despising dominion, speaking evil of dignities, doxas, glories, the ranked beings of the unseen world railed at by men who understand nothing of them. Against their swagger stands Michael the archangel, who in the dispute over the body of Moses durst not bring a railing accusation even against the devil, but said, The Lord rebuke thee, Zechariah 3:2's formula; the account comes by the fathers' report from the Assumption of Moses, a Jewish writing of the era, cited by Jude for a true incident as verse 14 will cite Enoch, and the exposition names the source as the fathers did. The lesson is restraint before powers, even fallen ones: what the archangel would not do, these men do naturally, as brute beasts, and corrupt themselves in it.

Jude 1:11-13

The woe names three roads: the way of Cain, religion without atoning blood and hatred of the accepted brother; the error of Balaam for reward, ministry sold, the thread 2 Peter 2:15 and Revelation 2:14 also run; and the gainsaying of Core, Korah's rebellion against God's appointed order, and perished is written as already done. The nature catalogue follows, spots in your feasts of charity, the love feasts infiltrated, clouds without water, trees twice dead and uprooted, raging waves foaming their own shame, and wandering stars, planetai asteres, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever. The wandering-star figure is Enoch's own image for the disobedient lights, and every picture is of promise without substance.

Jude 1:14-16

Jude quotes Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesying: Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, to execute judgment upon all, the words standing nearly verbatim in 1 Enoch 1:9, a book this site shelves as a labeled study resource. The fathers drew the line most of the church has held since: Jude's citation warrants the prophecy he quotes, not the whole book, as Paul's quoting a Cretan poet canonized no poet, and Tertullian's fuller claim for Enoch is the named minority; the exposition states the question honestly and stamps nothing. The quoted coming is the Lord's with his holy myriads, and verse 16's murmurers with great swelling words, admiring persons for advantage, are the prophecy's targets walking.

Jude 1:17-19

But, beloved turns from the intruders to the church: remember the words spoken before of the apostles, that there should be mockers in the last time, walking after their own ungodly lusts, the same forecast as 2 Peter 3:3 and 2 Timothy 3, so the presence of such men is itself a confirmation rather than a defeat. The intruders' anatomy is given in three strokes: they separate themselves, sensual, psuchikoi, soulish men, having not the Spirit. The men who claimed the higher spirituality are the ones without the Spirit at all.

Jude 1:20-23

The church's own defense is four participles around one imperative: building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, prayer in the Spirit's own power taught as the church's living practice, keep yourselves in the love of God, and looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. The rescue commands are triage: of some have compassion, making a difference, discernment between the doubting and the defiant, and others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, Zechariah 3:2's brand plucked from the burning behind the figure, while hating even the garment spotted by the flesh keeps the rescuer clean in the rescue. The text of verses 22-23 comes down in two-clause and three-clause forms, and the reader should know the seam is real.

Jude 1:24-25

The letter of the infiltrators ends on the keeping God: now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, aptaistous, unstumbling, the word for a sure-footed horse, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, agalliasis, exultation, the joy his and theirs at the presenting. The keeping the readers were commanded at verse 21 rests inside a keeping that is God's own power, the letter's first word about them, preserved in Jesus Christ, become its last. To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever: one of Scripture's fullest doxologies closes one of its shortest books.
