John 5:1-2

a feast of the Jews: John leaves the feast unnamed, and the bench has guessed Purim, Pentecost, and even Passover without settling it, a rare case where the evangelist's own silence outruns the commentators. Jesus goes up to Jerusalem for it regardless, keeping the pilgrim pattern of a devout Israelite. The pool by the sheep market carries a Hebrew name, Bethesda, house of mercy or house of outpouring depending on the reading, and its five porches match the archaeology since uncovered near St. Anne's church.

John 5:3-4

The porches held a great multitude of impotent folk, blind, halt, and withered, each waiting on a belief that an angel stirred the pool at intervals and the first to step in was healed. Verse 4 is absent from the earliest manuscripts, and the modern versions bracket or drop it as a later scribe's note explaining a local superstition rather than John's own words. Whatever its origin, the belief was plainly current in the scene, since the impotent man's own answer in verse 7 assumes it without argument.

John 5:5-7

Thirty and eight years is longer than most of the crowd around him had lived, and Jesus singles him out precisely because his case is the most hopeless in the porch. Wilt thou be made whole is not mockery but a real question, since long affliction can settle into a kind of resigned identity that no longer expects change. The man's answer names his real trouble, not the disease alone but the absence of anyone to help him into the water when it stirred, a friendless man in a crowd of the friendless.

John 5:8-9

Jesus answers a complaint about the pool with a command that bypasses it entirely, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk, healing without water, without the angel, without the race to be first. The man is made whole immediately, the command itself carrying the power it demands obedience to, and he picks up the very mat he had lain on for thirty-eight years. John closes the scene with a plain narrator's note, and on the same day was the sabbath, the detail that turns a mercy into a controversy.

John 5:10-13

The Jews, meaning here the Judean authorities enforcing the tradition rather than the people at large, object on a real point of the rabbinic sabbath code, which classed carrying a burden among the forbidden labors. The healed man's defense shifts responsibility to his healer's own authority, he that made me whole, the same said unto me, an argument the commentators note is entirely reasonable on its face. He cannot name Jesus, though, because Jesus had withdrawn into the crowd the moment the healing was done, leaving the man with an experience and no explanation.

John 5:14

Jesus finds him afterward in the temple, the fitting place for a healed man to bring his thanks, and gives a warning rather than a blessing. Sin no more does not claim his thirty-eight years of infirmity were sent for a specific sin, the same caution the ninth chapter states outright about another man's blindness. It does warn that a worse fate than physical weakness follows unrepented sin, a mercy received being no license for the life that follows it.

John 5:15-16

told the Jews that it was Jesus: The man departs and names his healer to the authorities, and the commentators divide over his motive, some reading simple gratitude to a benefactor he assumed they would want to honor, others a want of courage once questioned by men he feared. Either way the report becomes the occasion, and the Jews begin to persecute Jesus specifically because he had done these things on the sabbath day. A mercy performed in public has become evidence in a case already building against him.

John 5:17

Jesus answers the sabbath charge not by denying it but by relocating the ground of the argument entirely. Jewish teaching itself held that God's providential and judicial work never ceases, even on the sabbath, since he sustains the world and judges the living and the dead every day alike, only his work of original creation having rested. Jesus places his own action in that same class, My Father worketh, and I work, a claim his hearers understood at once was not about sabbath law but about who he was.

John 5:18

making himself equal with God: John states the real charge in his own narration, that Jesus had broken the sabbath and, worse in their eyes, called God his own Father, making himself equal with God. My Father, in the phrase Jesus used, claimed a unique relation of nature, not the covenant sonship every Israelite could claim of the Father of the nation. The discourse that follows does not correct this reading of his words but builds directly on top of it, John's narrator having already told the reader where the argument is headed.

John 5:19-20

The Son can do nothing of himself opens the first Verily, verily of the chapter, and rather than retreat from the equality charge Jesus grounds it in perfect union, the Son doing only and always what he sees the Father do. The bench reads this as neither denial of deity nor a lesser rank but the pattern of the Trinity itself, one will held by two persons in unbroken agreement. Verse 20 adds the reason, the Father's own love for the Son, and promises greater works still to make them marvel, the healing at Bethesda already smaller than what is coming.

John 5:21

Raising the dead was confessed in the synagogue's own daily prayer as God's own prerogative alone, no creature holding power over death and life. Jesus claims the same act for the Son, and adds a phrase that presses the claim further still, the Son quickeneth whom he will, a sovereign choice rather than a delegated task performed on request. The verse moves the equality of verse 18 from a title into an act only God can perform.

John 5:22-23

All judgment is committed to the Son, and the purpose clause that follows states why in the plainest terms the chapter offers, that all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. The bench notes the force of even as, not a lesser or derivative honor but the same honor due the Father himself. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father closes the verse, ruling out any reading that could treat reverence for Jesus as optional for those who claim to worship God.

John 5:24

The second Verily, verily states the book's purpose in miniature, hearing and believing issuing at once in everlasting life and exemption from condemnation. Is passed from death unto life is a completed tense in the Greek, a transfer already accomplished rather than merely promised for later, the thread of eternal life as a present possession running through this Gospel from here forward. The verse answers John 3:36 in advance of chapter 3's own full statement, life now for the one who believes, not life deferred to a verdict still to come.

John 5:25

The hour is coming, and now is joins the two tenses the Gospel's hour sayings elsewhere keep apart, an event both future and already begun. The dead who hear the voice of the Son of God are read by the bench as the spiritually dead, those in Adam's death hearing the gospel call and living by it, a resurrection already underway in Jesus' own ministry. The next section will speak of the graves themselves, and the deliberate overlap invites the reader to hold both the present and the future hour together rather than collapse one into the other.

John 5:26-27

to have life in himself: As the Father hath life in himself, underived and self-existing, so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself, a communication of the divine attribute of life eternally within the Godhead, not a gift bestowed on a creature at some point in time. Authority to execute judgment also is tied in verse 27 to his title Son of man, Daniel's figure given dominion, so that the one who judges humanity does so as one who shares its nature. The bench reads the pairing as deliberate, deity qualifying him to give life, true humanity qualifying him to judge the race he judges.

John 5:28-29

Marvel not turns from the hour already begun to the hour still ahead, when every grave without exception answers his voice, a bodily resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked. The two outcomes, unto the resurrection of life and unto the resurrection of damnation, are stated together in one verse, and how this general statement relates to the two resurrections separated by the thousand years of Revelation 20 is read differently across the church, some holding one resurrection in two phases and others a single event described here in summary. The verse itself commits only to the certainty of the event and the moral ground of its two outcomes, works done in the body answered at last.

John 5:30

I can of mine own self do nothing restates the pattern of verse 19 and closes the section of direct claims before the evidentiary appeal that follows. As I hear, I judge ties the Son's judgment to what he receives from the Father moment by moment, and my judgment is just because I seek not mine own will names the ground of that justice, perfect alignment rather than independent authority wielded apart from the Father. The verse turns the hearers from the claims themselves toward the proof Jesus is about to offer that the claims are true.

John 5:31-32

Jewish law required the mouth of two or three witnesses to establish a matter, and Jesus concedes the principle, if I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true, meaning not legally valid rather than false in fact. He immediately names another that beareth witness, and the bench divides over whether the Father is meant here already or the reference waits for verse 37, though either reading opens the same formal list of witnesses the chapter now builds, John, the works, the Father, and the scriptures each called in turn. The section reads like a case argued in a courtroom, which is precisely how this Gospel presents Jesus' whole ministry.

John 5:33-35

The first witness called is John the Baptist, whose deputation the leaders themselves had sent, and he bare witness unto the truth stands as testimony they cannot easily dismiss since they solicited it. Jesus adds that he does not depend on merely human testimony, but mentions it that ye might be saved, the witness offered for their sake rather than his need. The Baptist is called a burning and a shining light, a lamp kindled rather than the light itself, and the people had been willing for a season to rejoice in it without letting it lead them anywhere lasting.

John 5:36

The second witness outranks the first, greater witness than that of John, and it is the works themselves, given by the Father for the Son to finish. This Gospel calls such works signs, semeia, not bare wonders, each one pointing past itself to the one performing it, and Bethesda's healing just narrated is offered as exhibit rather than mere memory. The works testify that the Father hath sent me, evidence available to anyone willing to weigh it honestly.

John 5:37-38

The Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me names the third and greatest witness, though the hearers have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape, a testimony given yet unrecognized. His word not abiding in them is offered as the reason, unbelief in the one he sent showing that his word had never truly taken root, whatever their outward reverence for it. The verse turns their own claim to know God against them, since knowing him would have meant recognizing the one he sent.

John 5:39-40

Search the scriptures names the fourth witness and the one the hearers prized above all, their diligent study of the Hebrew text pursued because they thought that in them they had eternal life. Jesus does not fault the searching but the stopping short, for they are they which testify of me, the scriptures themselves pointing to him rather than being an end in their own right. Ye will not come to me exposes the real obstacle, not a lack of evidence but an unwillingness of the will, the verb chosen deliberately over an inability that could excuse them.

John 5:41-44

I receive not honour from men clears Jesus of the very motive he is about to diagnose in them, that they love the honor which comes from one another more than the honor that comes from God only. If another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive names a susceptibility the bench reads as prophetic, a people who reject the true Christ proving open to a false one precisely because self-seeking religion prefers a flatterer to a Lord. How can ye believe asks the plain question, since faith and the love of human praise pull in opposite directions.

John 5:45-47

The fifth and last witness is the most unexpected, Moses, in whom ye trust, becomes their accuser rather than their advocate, since his writings testify of Christ and their unbelief in Christ is therefore unbelief in Moses himself. Had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me makes the logical claim explicit, the same writings they built their whole religious confidence on pointing away from themselves and toward him. The chapter closes on the same charge chapter 9 will dramatize in a single man's excommunication, a people confident in Moses who cannot see that Moses wrote of the one standing in front of them.
