Jeremiah 41:1-3

in the seventh month: In the seventh month Ishmael, of the royal seed of David's line, comes to Gedaliah at Mizpah under cover of a shared meal and murders him at the table, along with the Jews and Chaldean soldiers present. Keil identifies the motive as dynastic and nationalist together, Ishmael's royal blood and Baalis of Ammon's political interest in destabilizing a Babylonian-appointed government meeting in one act. The treachery of eating bread together first, ancient hospitality's strongest bond, before the sword is drawn marks the murder as a violation the text itself flags by naming the meal.

Jeremiah 41:4-7

The day after the murder, before news has spread, eighty pilgrims arrive from the northern towns of Shechem, Shiloh and Samaria, mourning rites visible on their bodies, beards shaven and clothes rent and flesh cut, bringing offerings toward the ruined temple. Ishmael meets them weeping, a performance the commentators read as calculated grief, and lures them into the city where he slaughters most of them and casts the bodies into a pit. Gill notes that pilgrims from the north still traveling toward Jerusalem's site, temple burned or not, testify that devotion to the place survived even the fall of the old northern kingdom.

Jeremiah 41:8-10

Ten of the eighty buy their lives by revealing hidden stores of wheat, barley, oil and honey, and Ishmael spares them for the treasure rather than mercy, a detail Henry reads as showing the murderer's greed outweighing even his rage. The pit he fills with the dead is identified as the one Asa had made generations earlier against Baasha king of Israel, an old defensive work turned mass grave, which Barnes notes ties this chapter's violence back to the kingdom's oldest internal wars. Ishmael then takes the remnant at Mizpah captive, including the king's own daughters left in Gedaliah's care, and sets out for Ammon.

Jeremiah 41:11-15

Johanan and the other captains hear of Ishmael's massacre and pursue him, overtaking him at the great waters of Gibeon, and when the captive people see Johanan's forces they turn back to him with relief. Keil notes the captives' quick defection shows they went with Ishmael by force rather than sympathy, glad for rescue rather than resistant to it. Ishmael himself escapes with only eight men to the Ammonites, Baalis's territory offering him refuge from the vengeance Johanan's larger force could have exacted.

Jeremiah 41:16-18

Johanan recovers the whole remnant, soldiers, women, children and eunuchs, from Gibeon, but instead of returning to Mizpah the group turns south toward Bethlehem, planning to flee into Egypt out of fear of Chaldean reprisal for Gedaliah's murder. Henry observes the irony sharply, the men who rescued the remnant from Ishmael's violence now propose to abandon the very land Gedaliah died governing, trading Babylon's expected wrath for Egypt's supposed safety. The chapter closes on that fear rather than a resolution, setting up Jeremiah's warning in the chapter that follows.
