Now it came to pass, that, when all the people which were with Ishmael,.... That is, those which he had brought captives from Mizpah; not those that came with him thither: saw Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were with him, they were glad; looking upon them as their deliverers; hoping by their means to be preserved from being carried captives to the king of Ammon.

on Jeremiah 41:11-15

Johanan and the commanders pursue Ishmael and find him “near the great pool in Gibeon.” When the captives see Johanan, “they rejoiced” and went over, which shows they had been taken by force. Ishmael escapes with eight men to the Ammonites, the land of Baalis who had sent him.

The captives' joy at seeing Johanan tells how they had gone with Ishmael. John Gill identifies them as the people taken from Mizpah, who saw Johanan's men as deliverers from captivity in Ammon. They had been taken by force.
