Johanan and the commanders pursue Ishmael and find him “near the great pool in Gibeon.” When the captives see Johanan, “they rejoiced” and went over, which shows they had been taken by force. Ishmael escapes with eight men to the Ammonites, the land of Baalis who had sent him.

The people Ishmael had taken captive leave him as soon as Johanan appears. Adam Clarke says they were weary of the tyranny of Ishmael. Without them Ishmael has only his own men, and verse 15 counts them.
