Johanan and the commanders pursue Ishmael and find him “near the great pool in Gibeon.” When the captives see Johanan, “they rejoiced” and went over, which shows they had been taken by force. Ishmael escapes with eight men to the Ammonites, the land of Baalis who had sent him.

Ishmael came to Mizpah with ten men and leaves with eight. John Gill supposes the other two were killed in the skirmish, taken, or fled another way. He returns to the Ammonites who had set him on, Gill adds, without the honor he had hoped to win.
