Hebrews 4:1-2

The promise of entering into his rest still stands, and the writer's fear is pastoral, aimed at coming short as the wilderness generation did rather than at losing standing before the law. The Israelites heard the same gospel, glad tidings of rest ahead, but the word profited them nothing because it was not mixed with faith in the hearers, hearing without believing. The parallel to the wilderness account of chapter 3 continues without a break, the same warning aimed at the same danger.

Hebrews 4:3

We which have believed do enter into rest, the present tense marking an experience already begun and not merely a promise still future, as he said in the oath of Psalm 95, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest. That oath fell on unbelief, yet the rest itself was ready from the world's beginning, although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. The unbelief that shut Israel out proves only who forfeited the rest, never that the rest did not exist.

Hebrews 4:4-5

Two texts are set side by side to prove the rest still open: Genesis 2:2's record that God did rest the seventh day from all his works, and Psalm 95's repeated word, if they shall enter into my rest. The first shows a rest God entered at creation; the second shows a later generation still invited into it centuries after Eden, so the rest cannot be the land of Canaan alone, since Canaan came and went while David still pressed the invitation. The argument works by setting scripture beside scripture, the writer's method throughout the letter.

Hebrews 4:6-7

Since the rest remains open and the first hearers entered not in because of unbelief, the door is not closed, only unentered by them. God limiteth, or fixes, a certain day, again through David long after Joshua, saying To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts. The word Today, spoken centuries after the wilderness, is itself proof the rest was never exhausted by Israel's failure.

Hebrews 4:8

Jesus here renders the Greek Iesous, the same name as Joshua, and the writer trades on the identity: if Joshua had given Israel the promised rest in full, David would not have spoken of another day long after Joshua's conquest was already complete. Canaan was a real rest but not the final one, a type fulfilled in shadow and still awaiting its substance. The true Joshua, bearing the same name, gives the rest the first Joshua only pictured.

Hebrews 4:9-10

There remaineth therefore a rest, sabbatismos, a sabbath keeping, a word coined for this one point rather than borrowed from ordinary Greek usage. The rest is defined by its pattern: he that is entered into his rest has ceased from his own works, as God did from his own after creation. The Sabbath principle finds its fulfillment not in a day kept but in a labor finished, faith resting in a completed work rather than laboring to complete one.

Hebrews 4:11

The command sounds paradoxical, labour to enter rest, but the labor is against unbelief, not toward merit, striving to hold the faith that alone lays hold of what is finished. The example set as warning is the one named through chapters 3 and 4, the wilderness generation, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. Diligence and rest are not opposites in this letter; unbelief is what both stand against.

Hebrews 4:12-13

The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two edged sword, piercing to the dividing of soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and a discerner of the heart's thoughts and intents. The dividing of soul and spirit is read by Delitzsch and other trichotomists as evidence that soul and spirit are genuinely distinct parts of man, and by others as rhetorical intensity only, the word cutting to the innermost part however many parts a man is reckoned to have. Nothing is hidden from the God this word belongs to, all things naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do, the true ground of the warning, not the writer's rhetoric but God's own sight.

Hebrews 4:14

we have a great high priest: The argument turns from warning to comfort with a great high priest already possessed, one who has passed through the heavens, not merely into an earthly holy place once a year, Jesus the Son of God. The full name and title are given together, Jesus his humanity, Son of God his deity, both needed for the priesthood the letter builds toward in chapter 7. The conclusion is practical, let us hold fast our profession, the confession made under pressure to loosen.

Hebrews 4:15-16

This high priest is not distant from human weakness but touched with the feeling of our infirmities, tested in all points as we are, yet without sin, his sinlessness never removing him from real temptation but proving he met it fully and did not yield. Because of that priest, the throne once approached with terror at Sinai is now approached boldly, the same throne of grace where mercy and grace to help in time of need are found rather than only judgment. The chapter's warning and its comfort end at the same point, a Savior who has been where the reader is and did not fail there.
