Weekly portion 9 of 54

וַיֵּשֶׁב Vayeshev, Genesis 37:1 to 40:23

Read with it: Amos 2:6 to 3:8.

The verse numbers here are the ones a Hebrew Bible carries, which differ from an English Bible by a verse or two in several places. The Sephardi reading is named only where this site records a difference; communities vary beyond what is listed. What these books are, and how a Christian reader meets them →

How it is read

Rashi links the two chapters by the woman's slander: the officers fell so that Egypt would have something else to talk about than Joseph (Rashi on Genesis 40:1:1, the Pentateuch with Rashi's commentary by M. Rosenbaum and A. M. Silbermann, 1929 to 1934, public domain). For the offences of the butler and the baker he hands on the midrash's small and exact answer: "in the case of the one, a fly was found in the goblet of aromatic wine, in the case of the other, a pebble was found in the loaves he baked", on Genesis Rabbah 88:2 (Rashi on Genesis 40:1:2). The three branches and the three baskets he reads as counters rather than as periods, "They are a symbol to you of three days", and notes that the rabbis read them in several ways at Chullin 92a (Rashi on Genesis 40:12:1). The lifting of the head he explains from the idiom for counting: "When he musters his other servants to wait upon him during the meal he will count you also among them" (Rashi on Genesis 40:13:1). On the baker's baskets he describes what he knew himself, "In our country there are many such baskets and sellers of fancy rolls" put their wares in them (Rashi on Genesis 40:16:1), and on Pharaoh's birthday he gives the Hebrew form a reason, "because the infant is born only by the assistance of others", and names the day as the birthday festival on the authority of Avodah Zarah 10a (Rashi on Genesis 40:20:1). Radak reads the chapter as a study in how a prisoner treats other prisoners. He says the Torah names the two men as Pharaoh's officials although they were then no better placed than Joseph, and that "When Joseph saw their pitiful state of mind" he asked after them (Radak on Genesis 40:7:1, translated by Eliyahu Munk, HaChut Hameshulash, CC-BY), and he reads the baker's dream by the perishable goods in it (Radak on Genesis 40:18:1). Ibn Ezra comments here at six places and the corpus holds no English of him under a licence permitting quotation, so he stands as a citation: Ibn Ezra on Genesis 40:2:1, 40:3:1, 40:8:1, 40:15:1, 40:19:1 and 40:21:1.

What the rabbis say

The corpus records forty rabbinic locators on this chapter, thirty-four of them Midrash and six Talmud. Midrash Lekach Tov is the densest work here, cited at Genesis 40:4:1, 40:4:2, 40:6:1, 40:6:2, 40:7:1, 40:8:1, 40:21:1 and 40:23:1 and at Esther 2:21:3, which is the one place in this chapter where the rabbis read the two officers against the two doorkeepers of Esther. Bereshit Rabbah is cited at 19:2, 87:10, 88:1, 88:2, 88:4, 88:5, 88:7, 89:2 and 89:3, Bereshit Rabbati at Parashat Vayeshev 34, 35, 36, 51 and 52, Midrash Aggadah at Genesis 40:8:1, 40:9:1, 40:12:1, 40:17:1 and 40:17:2, and Bamidbar Rabbah at 1:11, 11:7, 14:5 and 15:12. The six Talmud locators fall where the chapter is about dreams and about the reading of them: Berakhot 55b and 55b:18 on dreaming and on the dream that is interpreted, Chullin 92a:5 and 92a:13 at the vine and the pressing of the cup, Jerusalem Talmud Pesachim 10:1:7 at the cup itself, and Jerusalem Talmud Avodah Zarah 1:2:9 at Pharaoh's birthday. Rashi hands on further sayings with their locators, among them Genesis Rabbah 88:2, Chullin 92a and Avodah Zarah 10a.

RambanSpain, 1194–1270· Commentary
“It seemed as though it budded. And it was as though it budded, i.e., it seemed to me in my dream as though it budded, and after the bud its blossom shot up, and after that it brought forth the clusters and then the ripe grapes.

Radak on Genesis 40:12

RadakProvence, 1160–1235· Commentary
שלשת ימים, when reflecting on the meaning of the dream Joseph realised that whatever it presaged would occur very soon. He surmised this from the speed with which the blossom on the vine in the dream had turned into fully ripened grapes and wine.
