Galatians 4:1-3

Paul extends the schoolmaster figure of 3:24-25 with a household picture: an heir as a child differs nothing in practice from a servant, though he owns everything by right, because he still answers to tutors and governors until the father's appointed time. Stoicheia, the elements of the world, is read two ways among the commentators, either the rudimentary religious observances common to Jew and Gentile alike or, per the unseen-world reading, the elemental spiritual powers Paul names again in Colossians 2:8 and 2:20; both candidates are held without a verdict here.

Galatians 4:4-5

The fulness of time names a moment of God's own choosing, not a natural ripening, and Paul packs the incarnation into a single sentence: God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law. Made under the law states that Christ entered fully into Israel's covenant obligation in order to redeem those under it, and the purpose clause names the goal, huiothesia, the adoption of sons, a Roman legal term for a father's formal act of receiving a son with full inheritance rights.

Galatians 4:6-7

Because ye are sons follows adoption with its evidence: God sends the Spirit of his Son into the heart, crying Abba, Father, the Aramaic word of a child's own household address, kept untranslated as Jesus himself used it in Gethsemane. The cry is the Spirit's own, not merely the believer's imitation, so the status just named in verse 5 is confirmed from inside; the servant of verse 1 has become an heir of God through Christ.

Galatians 4:8-11

Paul turns the argument on the Galatians directly: before, in their pagan ignorance, they served things which by nature are no gods; now, having known God, they are turning back to the weak and beggarly elements, observing days, months, times, and years. The astonishment is that a return to law-keeping functions, for a former pagan, exactly like a relapse into the old religious calendar he was rescued from, and Paul fears his labor among them may prove to have been in vain.

Galatians 4:12-14

Paul appeals to their old affection before he resumes the argument, be as I am, for I am as ye are, recalling that some physical infirmity was present when he first preached to them, yet they neither despised nor rejected him for it but received him as an angel of God. What the infirmity was is not named; Ramsay's South Galatian theory ties it to a fever contracted in the low country that drove Paul up into the highlands, while others connect it to the eye trouble the next verse implies, and the candidates stand without a verdict.

Galatians 4:15-16

The Galatians once counted themselves blessed to have Paul among them, so much so that they would have plucked out their own eyes and given them to him, language many read as evidence his infirmity involved his sight, a candidate that later feeds the question of the thorn in 2 Corinthians 12, held here as Tier A with no verdict. That devotion has curdled into treating Paul as an enemy for nothing more than telling them the truth, a reversal the rest of the chapter mourns.

Galatians 4:17-18

The Judaizing teachers court the Galatians zealously, but not well, aiming to exclude them from Paul's fellowship so the Galatians will in turn court the teachers themselves; the zeal is real, the object is possession, not the Galatians' good. Paul answers that zeal for a good thing is always right, whether he is present to see it or not, so the fault lies in the object of the zeal, not in zeal itself.

Galatians 4:19-20

Paul reaches for the most intimate figure available, travailing in birth again, a pastor's labor pains repeated because the first birth has not yet reached its true shape, Christ formed in you. He would rather be present to change his voice, tone matched to need, than continue the letter's necessary severity, a glimpse of the cost this confrontation carries for him.

Galatians 4:21-23

Paul turns the law itself against those who want to be under it: hear what the law says, and he goes to Genesis for two sons of Abraham, one by the bondmaid, born after the flesh, and one by the freewoman, born by promise. The distinction is not merely genealogical but categorical, the ordinary course of nature against the miraculous fulfillment of a divine word, and Paul builds the whole allegory on that difference.

Galatians 4:24-26

Which things are an allegory, allegoroumena, is Paul's own word and license for what follows: he reads the two women as two covenants, Hagar as Sinai, bearing children unto bondage, and Sarah as the Jerusalem above, the mother of the free. Paul grieves a covenant status under law in his own generation, on the way to the Jerusalem that is above; the allegory addresses the law-covenant Sinai represents, not the character of the Jewish people, and no reading that turns it toward the latter is kept here.

Galatians 4:27-28

Paul cites Isaiah 54:1, rejoice, thou barren that bearest not, originally spoken of Jerusalem's restoration after exile, and applies its pattern of a barren woman surpassed in children to Sarah, whose promised son outnumbers, in the covenant that counts, the bondwoman's son born by ordinary means. Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise draws the Galatians themselves into Isaac's place, heirs by the same miraculous word rather than by descent.

Galatians 4:29-31

Genesis 21:9-10 supplies the last piece: he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, read onto Ishmael's mockery of Isaac at the weaning feast, and Sarah's own demand, cast out the bondwoman and her son, becomes scripture's verdict that the two cannot share the inheritance. So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free closes the whole argument from Abraham begun in chapter 3, and chapter 5 opens on the liberty this verse has just secured.
