2 Timothy 1:1-2

the promise of life: Paul writes as an apostle by the will of God, not by human appointment, and grounds his call in the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus, the gospel already summarized inside his own greeting. He addresses Timothy as my dearly beloved son, warmer than 1 Timothy's plainer own son in the faith, the tenderness of a dying man's last letter. The greeting doubles Paul's usual grace and peace with mercy, a triad this letter alone among the Pauline letters gives Timothy, fitted to a young minister under real pressure.

2 Timothy 1:3-4

Paul serves God from my forefathers with pure conscience, his own Jewish heritage acknowledged even from an apostle to the Gentiles, and prays for Timothy night and day with an unceasing remembrance. The tears recalled in verse 4 are most naturally their last parting, and the desire to see him again greatly reveals a lonely prisoner's longing more than a formal courtesy. Joy, not obligation, is what Paul says Timothy's presence would fill in him.

2 Timothy 1:5

Paul names three generations, Lois, Eunice, and Timothy himself the heir, an unfeigned faith, anupokritos, without hypocrisy, proven genuine by its own transmission down a family line. Acts 16:1 records Eunice as a Jewess, and believed, married to a Greek, and this verse credits the home's quiet nurture rather than any office for planting the faith Timothy now carries into ministry. Paul's confidence, I am persuaded that in thee also, treats a household's faithfulness as real evidence, not sentiment.

2 Timothy 1:6-7

Stir up, anazopyrein, means to fan a smoldering coal back to flame, the gift already given at Paul's hands not extinguished but neglected, and the command assumes the gift remains alive and only wants use. What that gift is the text does not narrow to a single function, and the church's continuing experience of the Spirit's gifts stands behind the charge at full strength. Against timidity Paul sets what God has actually given, not a spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind, courage held in check by love and clear thinking together.

2 Timothy 1:8

The testimony of the Lord and Paul's own chain are named together, so that shame at either is shame at the same gospel, and the charge assumes shame is the real temptation a young minister under a hostile empire will feel. Partaker of the afflictions of the gospel calls Timothy into a shared suffering, not an audience to Paul's own, the letter's suffering thread opened in the same breath as its unashamed thread. According to the power of God supplies the strength the charge itself does not, so willingness need not outrun what God provides.

2 Timothy 1:9-10

God's saving call rests not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, a purpose Paul dates before the world began, language touching the eternal counsel behind salvation. How that eternal purpose relates to human choice is read variously across the church's history, and the text itself states the fact of God's prior purpose without settling the mechanism, a question read the same open way at Ephesians 1. What is not disputed is verse 10's center, Christ's appearing has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, the good news itself functioning as light thrown on what death had hidden.

2 Timothy 1:11-12

Paul's threefold office, preacher, apostle, and teacher of the Gentiles, is what has brought the suffering just described on him, and he answers it with the letter's second unashamed beat, I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed. The confidence rests on a person known, not merely a proposition believed, and Paul is persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him, his own soul and life's work entrusted for safekeeping. The day named is judgment day, the first appearance of the that-day thread that will recur through the letter as the fixed point Paul's confidence looks toward.

2 Timothy 1:13-14

The form of sound words is a pattern or outline, sound teaching given a fixed shape Timothy is to preserve rather than improve on, held in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus so that guarding doctrine and living it are one act. Verse 14 turns the deposit around: where verse 12 was Paul's soul kept by God, here it is that good thing, the apostolic teaching, committed to Timothy and kept by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us, the same Spirit who gave the gift of verse 6 now named as the deposit's guardian. The deposit runs in both directions across this letter, Paul entrusting himself to God and Timothy entrusted with the truth.

2 Timothy 1:15

All they which are in Asia be turned away from me is a wide claim from a man with few friends left, and Paul names two of them, Phygellus and Hermogenes, otherwise unknown to history beyond this verse. Naming them serves the letter's pattern of contrast, desertion set against the loyalty of Onesiphorus in the very next verses, so the general discouragement does not go unanswered. Whether the turning away was apostasy from the faith or simply abandonment of the imprisoned apostle personally is not settled by the text, and the exposition does not resolve past what is written.

2 Timothy 1:16-18

Onesiphorus receives what the deserters did not, a prayer for mercy, because he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain, the chapter's third unashamed beat given to a friend rather than to Paul himself, and he sought Paul out in Rome very diligently at real risk. Paul's prayer, the Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day, is a wish for a living man's household rather than a prayer to the dead; whether Onesiphorus himself had already died by the time of writing is an argument from silence the text does not settle, and later prayer for the departed built on this verse reads more into it than the verse itself states. The chapter closes with a personal note, his service at Ephesus already well known to Timothy, ordinary faithfulness recorded as history worth keeping.
