1 Samuel 8:1-2

Samuel's age forces the question the whole chapter turns on: no judge holds office forever, and this judge has no heir fit to follow him. He appoints Joel and Abiah at Beersheba, on Judah's southern frontier, likely ground recovered from the Philistines after the victory of chapter 7. The office passes from a prophet raised up by God to sons he only raised up himself, and the difference becomes the next verse's subject.

1 Samuel 8:3

Three clauses name one failure: they turned aside after lucre, took bribes, and perverted judgment, corrupt justice sold for pay. Samuel had judged Israel in a yearly circuit without charge to anyone, and his own sons undo that record at Beersheba. The elders' grievance at verse 5 answers a real wound before it answers a real theology, for they have watched a judge's house fail exactly as Eli's did.

1 Samuel 8:4-6

The elders travel to Ramah and put the request in words the law had already supplied: make us a king to judge us like all the nations answers Deut 17:14's own prediction that Israel would one day say it. The complaint against Samuel's sons is real, but the demand goes further than a remedy; it asks for the form every nation around Israel already had. Samuel takes it as a personal grievance and prays, and the Lord's answer at verse 7 corrects where the wound actually lies.

1 Samuel 8:7-9

The Lord reframes the request at once: they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them. Verse 8 sets the request inside Israel's whole history since Egypt, one more turn in a pattern of forsaking older than Samuel himself. God still tells Samuel to grant it, and to warn them first, so the manner of the king that follows is not a threat invented for the occasion but the plain cost of trading a divine king for a human one.

1 Samuel 8:10-12

The catalogue of taking opens with the crown's claim on Israel's sons, for chariots, for horsemen, to run before the chariots, then set as captains of thousands and of fifties or turned to plow the king's ground and reap his harvest. Deut 17:16 had forbidden the king Israel would one day have from multiplying horses to himself, and the first item Samuel names is the very thing the law had fenced off. What the elders picture as glory, Deuteronomy had already priced as loss.

1 Samuel 8:13-15

Daughters follow sons, taken to be confectionaries, cooks and bakers in the king's kitchens, a household conscription answering the military one just named. Fields, vineyards and oliveyards, the best of them, pass to the king's servants, and a tenth of the seed and the vineyards goes to his officers, so the tithe once brought to the Lord's house is matched by a human king's table. The tenth named here anticipates the tenth of the flocks at verse 17, and between the two the king takes what the law had reserved for God.

1 Samuel 8:16-18

Menservants, maidservants, the best of the young men and the asses are put to the king's work, and the tenth of the sheep follows the tenth of the seed. The section ends on the word that names what has happened in one syllable, ye shall be his servants, the very word just used of the officers who receive the tithes. Verse 18's promise, that in that day the Lord will not hear you, states the moral of the whole catalogue: a king got by rejecting God's reign brings a burden his own request cannot undo.

1 Samuel 8:19-20

The people refuse Samuel's warning outright: Nay; but we will have a king over us. Verse 20 repeats verse 5's own words, like all the nations, and adds what the elders had left unsaid before, that the king should go out before us and fight our battles, the very role Samuel himself had filled by prayer in chapter 7. The demand is not corrected by the warning; it is restated in fuller and more explicit form.

1 Samuel 8:21-22

Samuel does what he did at verse 6, taking the whole complaint back to God rather than answering it himself, and this time the Lord's word is short: hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. Nothing in Samuel's own resistance changes the outcome; God grants what he has already named a rejection of himself, and Samuel dismisses the elders to their cities to wait for it. Judges had ended on no king in Israel, every man doing what was right in his own eyes, and this chapter is the answer that book was left holding open.
