The text names God as the giver: “God gave knowledge and understanding in every kind of literature and wisdom” to all four. Daniel alone receives “insight into all kinds of visions and dreams,” the gift the rest of the book runs on. The chief official presents them to Nebuchadnezzar.

Jerome, John Gill and Adam Clarke read the time specified as the three years of training set in verse 5. Gill and Albert Barnes add that the whole group of Israelite youths came in together. The four stood among their peers.

Verse 18. "Therefore when the days had been completed at the end of which the king had bidden them to be presented to him, the chief of the eunuchs presented them in the presence of Nebuchadnezzar." By the "completed days" understand the period of three years which the king had appointed, so that after they had been nourished and trained for three years, they should then stand in the presence of the king.
