This is the law of jealousy

on Numbers 5:29-31

Adam Clarke calls this the most singular law in the Pentateuch and notes that many nations tried the accused by fire, poison or water. Israel’s trial carries no bodily hazard, since the woman swallows only water, dust and ink.

John Gill holds that once the husband brought her, only her confession could halt the process. Matthew Henry passes on the rabbinic teaching that the water failed when the husband had been unfaithful. It adds that the rite lapsed as adultery spread, which Henry ties to Hosea 4:14.
