When all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead--Moses and Eleazar were the sole witnesses of his departure (Nu 20:28). According to the established law, the new high priest could not have been present at the funeral of his father without contracting ceremonial defilement (Le 21:11). But that law was dispensed with in the extraordinary circumstances.

They go up in the sight of all the congregation, so the nation watches the priesthood change hands. Aaron dies on the top of the mount and two men come down where three went up. Deuteronomy 10:6 places his death at Mosera, and readers hold two accounts of that: Mosera as the name of the district with mount Hor a place inside it, or two records of the same stage kept side by side. The mourning runs thirty days, which is the term Israel keeps for Moses at Deuteronomy 34:8.

Though the loss was well made up in Eleazar, who, being in the prime of life, was fitter from public service that Aaron would have been if he had lived, yet it was a debt owing to their deceased high priest to mourn for him.
