Then Joshua summoned the Reubenites

on Joshua 22:1-3

The promise kept here was made at Numbers 32:20-22, where these tribes agreed to cross armed before the Lord until every tribe had its inheritance. Joshua's words at verse 3, "you have not deserted your brothers", are the receipt for it. Commentators reckon the service from Caleb's figures at 14:7 and 14:10, forty at the spying and eighty-five now, which leaves about seven years of war.

At Joshua 1:16-17 these tribes promised to obey Joshua just as they had obeyed Moses. Joshua now reports that promise kept on both counts. The two commanders had given one order.

When Moses was gone, they remembered and observed the charge he had given them; and all the orders which Joshua, as general of the forces, had issued out, they had carefully obeyed, went, and came, and did, as he appointed, Matt. viii. It is as much as any thing the soldier's praise to observe the word of command.
