Thus was their zeal for God tempered, guided, and governed by the meekness of wisdom. He that knows all things, and hates all evil things, would not punish the worst of criminals but he would first go down and see, Gen. xviii. Many an unhappy strife would be prevented, or soon healed by an impartial and favourable enquiry into that which is the matter of the offence.

Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest

on Joshua 22:13-15

Phinehas is the man of Numbers 25:7-8 who took a spear into the tent at Peor and stopped the plague, earning a covenant of peace at 25:12-13. He is sent to men accused of a second Peor, and Peor is the first thing he raises at verse 17. The ten chiefs are one for each western tribe, with Levi standing in the priest who leads them.
