The remnant ... - That is, those who shall be left after the invasion of Sennacherib. Shall return - Shall abandon their idolatrous rites and places of worship, and shall worship the true God. The mighty God - The God that had evinced his power in overcoming and destroying the armies of Sennacherib.
This promise of the conversion and salvation of a remnant of Israel is applied by the apostle ( Rom. ix. 27 ) to the remnant of the Jews which at the first preaching of the gospel received and entertained it, and sufficiently proves that it was no new thing for God to abandon to ruin a great many of the seed of Abraham in full force and virtue; for so it was now.
