Then Abimelech went to him--As there was a lapse of ninety years between the visit of Abraham and of Isaac, the Abimelech and Phichol spoken of must have been different persons' official titles. Here is another proof of the promise (Ge 12:2) being fulfilled, in an overture of peace being made to him by the king of Gerar.

The men who told him to go now come after him to swear a treaty. Their reason is that they can plainly see the LORD has been with him. Abraham swore the same kind of oath at this place in chapter 21, with a king of this name and a commander called Phicol. Isaac answers them with a feast.

God promised at verse 3 to be with Isaac, and here outsiders report it as a thing they can plainly see. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown took the overture of peace as proof of the promise at 12:2. The pagan king asks for both an oath and a covenant.
