Of the sons of Shechaniah - There were three of this name; the second is mentioned Ezr 8:6, and the third Ezr 10:2. They were all different persons, as may be seen from their fathers’ houses.

The chapter opens as a second registry, echoing Ezra 2 and Nehemiah 7 in form: heads of houses named before their numbers are given. Three men are named without a count, Gershom of Phinehas, Daniel of Ithamar, and Hattush of the house of David, the royal line still traceable a century after the exile began. Zechariah of Pharosh leads the first counted house at a hundred and fifty males, and the roll's method, name then number, runs on to verse fourteen.
