5 notes on this verseAnd they must dress themselves clean and sweet, and avoid every thing that was sweaty and filthy, to signify the purity of mind with which the service of God is to be attended to. Sweat came in with sin and was part of the curse.

The priests who minister in the inner court wear linen, with no wool or anything “that makes them perspire.” Before going out to the people they leave their garments “in the holy chambers.” The aim is “so that they do not transmit holiness to the people with their garments.”

Matthew Henry notes that sweat came in with sin as part of the curse (Genesis 3:19), so the priests avoid it at the altar. The linen reflects a clean mind in God's service. In Revelation 19:8 fine linen stands for the saints' righteous deeds.
