It was, however, only a prospective observance; we read of only one celebration of the passover during the protracted sojourn in the wilderness [Nu 9:5]; but on their settlement in the promised land, the season was hallowed as a sacred anniversary [Jos 5:10], in conformity with the directions here given.

The keeping of the feast is tied to a country the people have not seen, and five nations are named here where Exodus 3:8 named six and Genesis 15:19-21 named ten. What they are to keep is called this service, and the Hebrew root behind that word is the one Exodus 1:14 used five times over for the labour they left the week before. Seven days of unleavened bread close in a feast on the seventh, and the rule reaches past the table to the house, since no leaven is to be seen in all thy quarters.

The feast here carries the word Moses used before Pharaoh at 5:1 and 10:9, when he asked leave to hold a feast to the LORD in the wilderness. John Wesley notes that the request was made again and again. The feast Pharaoh refused becomes a yearly one.
