They burnt the house of God - Here was an end to the temple; the most superb and costly edifice ever erected by man. Brake down the wall of Jerusalem - So it ceased to be a fortified city. Burnt all the palaces - So it was no longer a dwelling-place for kings or great men. Destroyed all the goodly vessels - Beat up all the silver and gold into masses, keeping only a few of the finest in their own shape. See 2Ch 36:18.

The Chaldean sword shows the compassion of verse fifteen inverted: it has no compassion upon young man or maiden, old man, or him that stooped for age, striking in the house of their own sanctuary. Chronicles names in one list what Kings tells as narrative: the house of God burnt, the wall of Jerusalem broken down, the palaces burnt with fire, and the goodly vessels that remained destroyed. Clarke calls the temple the most costly building ever raised by human hands, and this chapter is where it ends.
