The Thirty are given by name and town, and the roll opens with Asahel, dead since Abner killed him at 2:23. At verse 34 stands “Eliam son of Ahithophel the Gilonite”, and since 11:3 calls Bathsheba the daughter of Eliam, some make Ahithophel her grandfather.

Gibeah was Saul's own town, and John Gill notes that naming it keeps this Ittai apart from Ittai the Gittite of 15:19. A man from Saul's home served among David's thirty. The King James spells the first name Heleb, and Gill cites the form Heled at 1 Chronicles 11:30.
