These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada,.... Slew a lion, and two lion-like men of Moab, and an Egyptian of a gigantic stature, 2Sa 23:20, and had the name among three mighty men; of which he was one, and Abishai another, the third Asahel, one of the thirty; or was over them, 2Sa 23:24, since thirty are reckoned without him. Abarbinel thinks that the third was Adina, the son of Shiza, the Reubenite, 1Ch 11:42; since thirty were with him, and he at the head of them.

Benaiah struck down “two champions of Moab”, killed a lion in a pit “on a snowy day”, and killed an Egyptian “with his own spear”. He went against the Egyptian with a club and turned the enemy’s weapon on him, as David did with Goliath’s sword.

John Gill names the second three as Benaiah son of Jehoiada, Abishai and Asahel, the same grouping Jamieson, Fausset and Brown give. Gill reports the view of Abarbinel that the third was Adina the Reubenite of 1 Chronicles 11:42. The roll leaves the third without a name.
