on 2 Kings 22:3-5

In his eighteenth year Josiah sends Shaphan to have Hilkiah the high priest count the money. By 2 Chronicles 34:3 to 8 his seeking began in his eighth year and the purge of idols in his twelfth. The eighteenth year marks the finding of the book, well into the reform.

Albert Barnes finds two ranks of workers here. The supervisors held the contract and oversaw the whole repair of the temple. They paid the workmen below them, the carpenters, builders and masons named in verse 6.

The “doers” of the first part of the verse are the contractors, or overseers, who undertook the general superintendence; they are to be distinguished from a lower class of “doers,” the actual laborers, carpenters, and masons of the latter portion of the verse. Which is in the house of the Lord - Rather, “who are,” etc.; i. e., the persons who were actually employed in the temple.
