Prepare your brethren ... - i. e. “as you minister to your brethren the people, by killing and flaying their offerings and handing the blood to the priests, instruct them how they are to eat the Passover acceptably.” It is implied that many would be ignorant of the requirements of the Law.

The Levites prepare by families in their divisions, “according to the instructions written by David king of Israel and Solomon his son”. These are the courses of 1 Chronicles 23 to 26. Each family of Levites serves its kinsmen “to carry out the word of the LORD given by Moses”.

John Gill takes the consecration as the washing of body that made the Levites fit to serve. Albert Barnes reads the preparing as teaching the people how to eat the Passover as the law requires. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown note that each lamb went to a household by its numbers.
