The closing formula matches every reign Chronicles reports and points to a fuller source, here “the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah”. It closes Josiah's story on his “deeds of loving devotion,” leaving aside his last decision. This Passover is the last the book records before the exile.

Adam Clarke cites the Targum, which spells out the first and last acts: the judgments he gave from his eighth year, and the purging. Matthew Henry notes that the Passover led the feasts of the law, and Hezekiah and Josiah, the two great reformers, revived religion by keeping it.

It began them all in the night wherein Israel came out of Egypt; it concluded them all in the night wherein Christ was betrayed; and in the celebration of it Hezekiah and Josiah, those two great reformers, revived religion in their day.
