Biography
Athaliah was the daughter of the most wicked king of Israel, Ahab, and his notorious wife Jezebel, making her the embodiment of their evil legacy transplanted into Judah. When her son Ahaziah was killed by Jehu, she moved swiftly to massacre all the royal seed of the house of David to seize the throne for herself — a move that nearly extinguished the messianic line entirely.
Unknown to her, the infant Joash was hidden in the Temple by the priest Jehoiada and his wife Jehosheba for six years. In the seventh year, Jehoiada orchestrated a coup, crowned young Joash king, and when Athaliah came to the Temple crying "Treason!" she was seized and executed at the horse gate. Her six-year reign was the only break in the Davidic dynasty and represents Satan's most direct assault on the messianic line.
When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the royal family.

Spiritual Significance
Athaliah represents the most direct satanic attack on the Davidic covenant and the messianic line. Her near-extermination of David's descendants shows that God's promises are preserved against impossible odds — one hidden child was all that remained of the line leading to Jesus Christ.
How Athaliah Points to Jesus
The hidden Joash preserved in the Temple is a type of Christ — the true King hidden from the usurper, preserved by God's faithfulness until the appointed time of revelation and coronation.
