on 1 Samuel 30:17-20

Only four hundred young men escape, riding off on camels. Saul had been told at 15:3 to destroy Amalek's camels with the rest, a link Clarke and Keil and Delitzsch note. David recovers everything taken, wives, sons and daughters, and the flocks become in his men's words “David’s plunder.”

Matthew Henry observes that the Amalekites kept everything they had taken with care, thinking they kept it for themselves. David recovered it all for its owners. John Gill notes that his two wives are named as David's own special concern.

Providence had so ordered it that the Amalekites carefully preserved all that they had taken, concluding that they kept it for themselves, though really they preserved it for the right owners, so that there was nothing lacking to them; so it proved, when they concluded all was gone: so much better is God oftentimes to us than our own fears.
