Two hundred of the six hundred are too spent to cross the brook and stay with the baggage, a detail the narrator keeps for its own sake, since the men left behind will matter again at verse twenty-one. David presses on with four hundred, the same number who first gathered to him in the cave of Adullam, an army built from the discontented now doing the discontented's work.

The two hundred had marched three days from Aphek to a burned Ziklag, then set out again at once. John Wesley calls four hundred men a small force. David goes on in reliance on the answer of verse 8.
