Yet his building the house would not prove him to have a perfect heart unless he made conscience of keeping God's commandments.

David says that the abundance gathered for the temple is “from Your hand”, as verse 14 confessed. Verse 17 names the ground of giving, “You test the heart and delight in uprightness”. The prayer closes by asking for Solomon “a whole heart”, what verse 9 found in the people.

David asks for Solomon a whole heart for the commandments of God and for building His palace. Matthew Henry notes that the building would show Solomon's heart whole only if he also kept the commandments. The palace is the temple David had prepared for.
