The summary gives David's reign as forty years, the figures of 2 Samuel 5:4-5. The account in 1 Kings 2 closes David's life with a deathbed charge. Chronicles leaves that scene out and says only that he died “at a ripe old age, full of years, riches, and honor”.

David reigned over Israel for forty years. Seven were in Hebron and thirty-three in Jerusalem. John Gill, on the next verse, gives his age at death as seventy years, so David began to reign at thirty.
