The summary gives David's reign as forty years, the figures of 2 Samuel 5:4-5. The account in 1 Kings 2 closes David's life with a deathbed charge. Chronicles leaves that scene out and says only that he died “at a ripe old age, full of years, riches, and honor”.

He was very old, and very rich, and very much honoured both of God and man. He had been a man of war from his youth, and, as such, had his soul continually in his hand; yet he was not cut off in the midst of his days, but was preserved through all dangers of a military life, lived to a good old age, and died in peace, died in his bed, and yet in the bed of honour.
And it is hard to say which shines brighter here, the setting sun or the rising sun. 1 Furthermore David the king said unto all the congregation, Solomon my son, whom alone God hath chosen, is yet young and tender, and the work is great: for the palace is not for man, but for the L ORD God.

Riches and honour - That is, he had enough of this world, and of the riches of and honour of it; and he knew when he had enough. He was satisfied with it, and very willing to go to a better place.
