David divided the Levites into divisions
on 1 Chronicles 23:6-11
The thirty eight thousand are sorted into divisions by the three Levitical houses, “Gershom, Kohath, and Merari”. Jeush and Beriah “did not have many sons, so they were counted as one family”. The register fixes every family's place ahead of the working divisions of chapters 24 to 27.

Two men named Shimei stand in this list. This Shimei has three sons, Shelomoth, Haziel and Haran, who head families of Ladan's line. John Gill, following Kimchi, takes him for a descendant of Ladan and a different man from Gershon's son Shimei in verse 10.
