David divided the Levites into divisions
on 1 Chronicles 23:6-11
The thirty eight thousand are sorted into divisions by the three Levitical houses, “Gershom, Kohath, and Merari”. Jeush and Beriah “did not have many sons, so they were counted as one family”. The register fixes every family's place ahead of the working divisions of chapters 24 to 27.

Shimei's four sons are Jahath, Zina, Jeush and Beriah. John Gill, following Kimchi, takes this Shimei as Gershon's son and Ladan's brother. Gill reads the four as his descendants living in David's time.
