on 1 Chronicles 23:6-11
The thirty eight thousand are sorted into divisions by the three Levitical houses, “Gershom, Kohath, and Merari”. Jeush and Beriah “did not have many sons, so they were counted as one family”. The register fixes every family's place ahead of the working divisions of chapters 24 to 27.

Ladan and Shimei head the Gershonite houses. John Gill takes them as the same pair called Libni and Shimhi in Exodus 6:17, the sons of Gershon. Their sons follow in verses 8 to 11.
