on 1 Chronicles 23:1-2

David's last recorded act as king is administrative: he crowns Solomon and convenes the princes, priests and Levites before he turns to the temple's structure. Chronicles gives this scene no parallel in Kings; the Chronicler's own material begins here and runs to the book's end.

David gathers Israel's leaders along with priests and Levites. This assembly frames the count of Levites in verse 3 and the courses of chapter 24. John Wesley, on verse 4, says the Levites served by courses, a thousand at a time.
