4 notes on this verseTheir brethren the sons of Kish took them - This was according to the law made Num 27:1, etc., and Num 36:5-9, in favor of the daughters of Zelophehad, that women who were heiresses should marry in the family of the tribe of their father, and that their estates should not be alienated from them.

One line breaks the pattern: “Eleazar died without having any sons”, and “Their cousins, the sons of Kish, married them”. The law in Numbers 27 and 36 makes the same provision for Zelophehad's daughters, so a family's inheritance stays inside its tribe. The detail keeps a line in the record.

Mahli's son Eleazar leaves only daughters, and their cousins marry them. Adam Clarke ties the marriage of Kish's sons to these heiresses to the law for Zelophehad's daughters in Numbers 27 and 36. Heiresses married within their father's tribe so the estate stayed in the family.
